Sex, Gender and ICD-11: what to do about all those people down there in Blocks 64-66 by Dr. Sam Winter (Member of the WHO Working Group on Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health)

seminar posterAbstract:
The WHO ICD revision process is well underway. An eleven-member WHO Working Group on Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health has been looking at the case for reforming (or deleting!) diagnoses currently in Chapter 5 (the Mental and Behavioural Disorders chapter) of ICD-10’s, in Blocks F64 (‘gender identity disorders’), F65 (‘disorders of sexual preference’) and F66 (‘psychological and behavioural disorders associated with sexual development and orientation’). Diagnoses like 'transsexualism', 'dual-role transvestism', 'fetishistic transvestism', 'sadomasochism', 'exhibitionism', 'voyerurism', 'paedophilia'  and 'sexual maturation disorder' are under close scrutiny. The Working Group has developed and drafted preliminary proposals, which (as I write this abstract) are undergoing review by clinicians. The proposals (some of them pretty major) are due to be uploaded soon onto the WHO ICD site for public (indeed global) comment. The presenter, a member of the Working Group, will share the major recommendations for these three blocks of diagnoses, and invite feedback.

N.B.The Group has also examined Block F52 (sexual dysfunctions) which will not be the subject of the presentation.
